Romain Battajon

Praetica Kinshasa

Romain holds a degree from the University of Bordeaux IV (France) (2000), specialized in intellectual property and media law and a degree of profound study of criminal law of the Pantheon-Sorbonne University in Paris (France) (2002). Afterwards, he joined the Doctoral School of Comparative law for three years as a teacher-scientist European criminal law and comparative criminal law. In the meantime, he worked for three years as a legal assistant of magistrates of different civil and criminal chambers at the Supreme Court in Paris (2003-2004).

Romain is member of the Paris bar since 2005. In 2007, he became member of the bar of Kinshasa/Matete (one of the two bars of Kinshasa), in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He started his career as a trainee-lawyer in a prestigious Parisian law firm, specialised in corporate criminal law. Afterwards he worked for several years as a lawyer assistant in a Parisian law firm, specialised in civil, corporate and criminal liability law, and corporate law.

Therefore, Romain has built a considerable experience in civil and business liability. Since 2007, he focusses mainly on legal and tax counselling of investors on the African continent, with a solid experience in mining law, tax law, OHADA law, international law, banking law, telecommunication law, public business law and corporate criminal law. Roman has also developed a specific experience in sports law.

Since 2014, Romain is based in Kinshasa, where he leads the firm Praetica Kinshasa. He has also an office in Paris. He is regularly involved in various African countries, outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), particularly in Congo – Brazzaville, Angola, Benin, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Djibouti, Mauritius, etc.

Romain created and leads since 2010 the Africa Business & Legal Expertise Network (ABLE Network), the first inter-African network focussing on advising the African business community, which forms a network of over one hundred lawyers since January 2016 and sectoral experts and consultants, with the possibility of intervention in 46 countries in Africa. In 2015 Romain was elected by the magazine ‘Financial Afrik’ among 100 personalities who have changed Africa in 2014 on economic and financial field.

Roman is also a lecturer commercial law at the University of Kinshasa, and regularly lectures on topics related to corporate law and investment in Africa, especially within the ‘Club d’Echanges Afrique-France de la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris –Ile de France’.

He is a member of many clubs and association, including the ‘Chambre de Commerce Internationale Franco-Congolaise’, the Club ‘Afrique de l’Association Française des Investisseurs pour la Croissance’, ‘l’Institut Euro-Africain de Droit Economique’, ‘Pan African Lawyers Union’, etc.

Romain speaks French and English.
